Tantra for Modern Living: A Holistic Approach to Personal Growth

Tantra is an ancient spiritual tradition that originated in the Indian subcontinent around the middle of the 1st millennium CE that encompasses both Hinduism and Buddhism. Often misunderstood in contemporary culture, tantra is a multifaceted practice that seeks to guide it’s followers towards spiritual liberation and self-transformation. At its core, tantra aims to help practitioners achieve spiritual liberation and personal transformation through various practices, including rituals, disciplines, meditation, and sometimes even sexual practices.

The term "tantra" comes from the Sanskrit word that means "to weave" or "compose," and it refers to a type of instructional text, often written as a dialogue between a god and a goddess. One of the key principles of tantra is the concept of "non-duality," which asserts that all things are interconnected and that the ultimate reality transcends the dualities of existence, such as good and evil or pleasure and pain.

In its essence, Tantra is about achieving freedom and unity, and expressing one's true self. It is a practice that invites you to be 100% present in each moment and choose to experience it fully without trying to escape or change it.

Through Tantra, we learn to break free from the limits of our ego and conditioning. We learn to let go of our fears, doubts, and inhibitions and embrace the fullness of our being.

At the heart of Tantra is the practice of mindfulness – the ability to be fully present in each moment without judgment or distraction. Through mindfulness, we learn to tune in to our bodies, emotions, sensations, and surroundings, experiencing everything with a sense of openness and curiosity. We learn to let go of our mental chatter, quiet our minds, and connect with our true selves.

Tantra recognizes that sexuality is a powerful force that can be used to connect with our partners, explore our bodies and desires, and awaken our spiritual selves. However, Tantra also acknowledges that sexuality is just one aspect of our being and that there are many other ways to experience unity, joy, and freedom.

Why Tantra is a part of my work

My coaching is a blend of tantra, somatic work (embodiment), neuroscience, and one-of-a-kind wisdom YOU!

Ancient Eastern wisdom and modern Western science weave together in a powerful holistic approach.

I have incorporated Tantra into my work with clients because of its holistic approach to healing and integration. It recognizes that the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected and that true healing can only occur when all aspects of our being are addressed.

Through the practices of Tantra, my clients are able to explore their deepest desires, connect with their true selves, and break free from the limiting beliefs, societal and cultural conditioning, and trauma patterns that have been holding them back from experiencing love and growth.

Tantra has also taught me the importance of mindfulness in my work with clients. By helping them tune in to their bodies and emotions, I am able to facilitate deeper healing and transformation.

I have seen firsthand how Tantra can be a powerful tool for healing family dynamics such as mother/father wounds, and inner child wounds creating a stronger foundation of self-love.

In my own life I have experienced Tantra being a profound practice of experiencing the sacredness in the mundane. Unlike many other spiritual paths that focus on renunciation, tantra was specifically developed for householders—individuals who are fully engaged in the material world and have family and social responsibilities. The tantric tradition offers a spiritual path that encourages practitioners to embrace the challenges and opportunities of everyday life as a means to spiritual growth and transformation.

The three core principles that drive the Tantric tradition are:

Awakening

You are not what you are raised to believe you are. The beliefs and identity you've been raised to adopt do not define your true essence. Your ego, thoughts, and emotions are aspects of your existence, but they do not encompass your entire being. On the most profound level, you are all of those elements, yet your collective identity does not genuinely represent who you are. The process of awakening involves becoming aware that your true self is the presence and consciousness within you. You are intimately connected to all of life, and the one thing that is consistent in you is your presence and consciousness. This realization serves as the awakening principle, a cornerstone of Eastern mystical traditions, and forms the basis of Tantra's philosophical foundation.

Liberation

Our self-perceptions and societal conditioning often hold us back, creating a figurative prison filled with taboos, fears, and discomforts that live rent free in our unconscious minds. Liberation is the decision to be free of these untruths and embrace our authentic selves. Our consciousness is not confined by the idea that sex is impure. It’s not even bound by trauma, race, or gender. Not being liberated means we impose artificial limitations on ourselves, restricting our energy flow, our sense of being, and our vitality based on societal norms and external influences.

Liberation involves a willingness to release ourselves from these constraints. Our taboos and beliefs about the world and ourselves often contain a significant amount of energy, which, when suppressed, lowers our energy levels, vibrations, and ability to thrive in the world. As we dissolve or escape the shackles of shame, fear, and guilt, we unleash vast reserves of energy. True liberation feels like approaching each moment with a renewed sense of vibrancy and liveliness.

There is consciousness in everything

This concept can be expressed in various ways, such as:

  • Everything is One

  • There is divinity in everything

  • There is a unifying presence and consciousness in everything

There are also stages of this:

Individuality which is the stage of being uniquely yourself and fully inhabiting your divinity in the unique way that it expresses itself through you.

Connectedness. This stage is where you recognize that your consciousness is connected to everything, leading to a profound sense of interconnectedness.

Connection to the Formless .The stage where you experience a connection to the formless essence, the fertile void from which all creation emerges and serves as the source of everything. This is where you get to experience yourself as boundless potential.

Incorporating these principles into my coaching practice has allowed me to help my clients achieve a sense of harmony and balance in their lives. By embracing the awakening principle, they are able to become more conscious of their true selves and their interconnectedness with the world around them. This leads to a greater sense of liberation, allowing them to shed their limiting beliefs and behaviors and step into their true power.

Through Tantra, my clients also learn to embrace the concept of consciousness in everything, recognizing that there is a unifying presence and intelligence in all things. This leads to a greater sense of connectedness, both with themselves and with others, as well as a deepening sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.

Tantra is a practice that teaches us to embrace all aspects of ourselves and our experiences, both the light and the dark. It invites us to move beyond our fears and limitations and connect with our true selves, our partners, and the world around us in a deeper, more meaningful way.

They learn to embrace their sacred sexuality as a natural and healthy part of who they are and use it to connect intimately with themselves and their partners.

By integrating Tantra into my work, I am able to help my clients cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness, self-love, and intimacy in their relationships. I believe that when we are able to connect with ourselves on a deeper level, we are able to form more meaningful and fulfilling connections with others.

Tantra is a rich and multifaceted spiritual tradition that has a lot to offer those seeking deeper connection and spiritual growth.
