5 Reasons to Love Your Period

Most women (and sometimes men) dread that time of the month. I get it. We’ve been programmed every day since we were young to freak out about our periods, pretend they don’t exist and put on a happy face while experiencing symptoms like cramps, bloating and acne. It’s rare that anyone has anything nice to say when “Aunt Flo” comes to visit. But what if we reframed the conversation and embraced the beauty of our cycles?

Here are five reasons why I love my period and you should too:

1. It’s a sign you’re healthy

Hormones regulate our periods and our bodies. If your cycle is irregular or non-existent (and you’re not pregnant) it could be a sign that your nutrition might be off as well. I’d recommend seeing a doctor if your cycle is off, but some health concerns that your period can give you clues to are Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid issues and eating disorders. That said, be thankful for your healthy period. It’s a privilege some never experience.

2. It gives us a reason to pause

We live in an era where we’re always on the go. Society already makes us feel as if we’re not moving fast enough these days. I love my period because it gives me a moment to really just hit the pause button, even if it’s for one day to just close the door, soak in my emotions, put on a face mask and ride out the cramps. The best part is that our house is a household full of women, so everyone understands when it’s just “one of those days.” The world can be demanding and you deserve every moment you can to pause.

3. It’s a natural detox and cleanse

Your cycle is one way that your body cleanses itself from toxins that build up within the body. Not saying it’s always a walk in the park, though! You might break out, feel bloated and crave all. the. things. While I’m on my period, one thing I like to do to help support the detoxification process is to load up on tea and take some time for myself. My favorite tea is dandelion with cranberry.

4. It helps you bond with other women

We’re all so uniquely different. Our bodies come in different shapes and sizes, which is such a beautiful thing. One common bond that holds most of us together is the experience of having a period. You can pretty much say “it’s that time of the month” to any girlfriend and receive immediate empathic laughter and support. I remember having conversations about the reproductive system with my 13-year-old daughter. That day was nerve wracking for me as a mother, but it also gave my daughter and I a window to a whole new world of conversations. It truly was an amazing and empowering moment.

5. It’s a reminder that women are incredibly strong

I still work out while I’m on my period. I keep moving because I don’t let anything stand in the way of my health. Plus, working out helps relieve my cramps and cleanses my body of toxins. I find that when I’m properly equipped with the right products like U by Kotex® FITNESS* tampons, pads and liners that I don’t have to worry about skipping a workout or going on a long bike ride just because I’m on my period. I love that they are designed for active women who live life fully in motion. I’m especially obsessed with the U by Kotex® FITNESS* tampons. They come with a compact FitPak* that fits perfectly in my biking fanny pack. You can score a discount on products here.

Being on your period can be a struggle. But the good thing is it only lasts a few days out of the month and if we can learn how to embrace our periods and the amazing ways our bodies work, we can truly learn how to love ourselves at every stage in our lives.
